Compliant but quietly disengaged: How to identify students who are under the radar.

While a teacher has a gut feeling for these things, it’s not always easy to know exactly who is or isn’t engaged in their lessons. With technology a now widely accessed resource in classrooms today, students have evolved their distractibility and are much better equipped to hide behind screens, and while noise may be at a low student chatting is taking place in digital form.

So how do teachers recognise new forms of disengagement in students?

Here’s a list of new student behaviours to be on the look out for.

Intermittent workers

Work when they believe they are being watched and move off task when the opportunity arises

Easy riders

Work more slowly than other students lowering teacher expectations

Ghosts

Those who go completely unnoticed by their teacher.
